You click the Home button to exit the Book Reader and return to the teacher homepage.

A message box presents the following three options. You click:

  • Cancel if you do not want to close the book.
  • Exit Don’t Save if you want to close the book without saving notes or changes.
  • Exit Save Notes if you want to close the book and save notes or changes.

Your changes can also be saved at any time by using the Save button Save.

Title Bar

Click the Lock / Edit button to switch between the Lock and Edit modes of the Book Reader.

The Edit mode allows you to modify the textbook, including adding, editing and deleting any of your own additional resources in the online textbook.

Lock mode enables you to save/delete annotations, add/edit/delete resources and save notes pages.

The Lock mode is useful in class where you want to prevent an accidental deletion of resources you may have added into the textbook.

Click Fullscreen / Normal to toggle between a fullscreen view of the book without displaying the browser and normal view.

Fullscreen mode provides a clearer view of the textbook page. When in fullscreen mode, most keystrokes are disabled for security reasons, so you will not be able to type into the text boxes, resource forms or page number box.

In some browsers, you can also press the F11 key to enlarge the view on your screen. Using the F11 key does not disable keystrokes, and so does not reduce the functionality of the Book Reader.

Side Navigation Bar

You click the Arrow button to stop using any other tool. The arrow is the default tool, and enables you to select objects in a book, launch resources and edit Text Boxes.

The Pen Tool enables you to write on the page. You click the Pen button to open the Pen Tool submenu. This allows you to change the link thickness, choose a highlighter colour and undo a previous stroke.

Annotations can be temporarily hidden by using the Show/Hide button. This is particularly useful for notes that may be prepared in advance, and revealed later.

Another trick is to use the Pen Tool with a thick white colour to hide words in the book. This can be used to create your own cloze tests. Cover the words you want to hide with thick white strokes in advance of the lesson, and then use the Show/Hide button to reveal the words underneath.

You click the Text Tool button to insert a Text Box. The cursor changes into a Text Box symbol. You click the area of the page to place the new Text Box. You now can type your notes directly into the Text Box. Once you have finished typing, click anywhere outside the Text Box to finish.

 

At the top of the Text Box is a toolbar. This enables you to:

  • Change the size of the text.
  • Change the colour of the text.
  • Drag the Text Box around, to reposition it on the page.
  • Minimise the Text Box to a small icon.
  • Delete the Text Box.
When the Text Box is minimised, it appears on the book as a small icon. This icon can be moved around the page by dragging it. To restore the Text Box to full size, click the icon.

You click the Highlighter button to open the Highlighter Tool submenu. This allows you to change the link thickness, choose a highlighter colour and undo a previous stroke.

The Close button on the submenu option only closes the submenu, and does not deactivate the Highlighter Tool. To stop using the highlighter, click the Arrow button.

The Eraser Tool enables you to erase any pen or highlighter marks on the page. You click the Eraser icon and rub it over any pen or highlighter marks.

The Eraser Tool only erases your notes, and does not erase any text from the online textbook.

You click the Presentation button and choose the shape of your spotlight from the submenu.


The Spotlight button reveals a circular area of the page


The Curtains button shows a rectangular area of the page

 

On clicking the Spotlight button, the page is immediately covered in a dark layer, with only a circle of the page visible. This area can be moved and resized.

On clicking the Curtains button, only a rectangular can be visible. You can drag the arrows on each side of the rectangle to increase or decrease its size.

The Spotlight tool does not work in conjunction with any other tool (for example, you cannot use the pen while the spotlight is applied), and the selection of any other tool immediately cancels the spotlight.

You click the Add a blank page button to create a new blank page within the book.

This blank page can be used to create notes using the Pen, Highlighter and Text tools, and can then be saved as a new resource into the book.

In this way, you can expand the book with your own additional notes and diagrams, which can all be saved and linked directly into the online textbook.

To save the page, click the Close button. You will be offered the option to save the page to your Resources and add a title to the new page.

You click the Save button to any annotations you may have made with the Pen, Highlighter or Text tools on any of the book pages.

When you exit the Book Reader, you will again be asked if you are sure you want to save any changes you have made. You click Yes to save the changes.

You click the Show/Hide button to temporarily hide any Pen, Highlighter, Text Boxes or icons. You click the button again to show the annotations.

The Hide mode allows you to see the textbook page exactly as it is printed.

The Hide mode does not delete the annotations and icons

You click the Erase All button to erase all annotations on the current page or in the entire book.

When you click the button, you will be asked to confirm the action. You will also be provided with an option to apply the Erase All action to the entire book, and not just the current page.

Note that Text Boxes and Resources are not deleted with this button, but have their own individual Delete buttons on each one.

Bottom Navigation Bar

The Toolbar contains tools for directly annotating and manipulating the book content.

You use the Pencil Case button in the Navigation Bar to show and hide the Toolbar.

You click the Switch Sides button  to move the Navigation Bar and Toolbar from one side of the screen to the other.

You can click the Zoom button to view a single-page width view. You can click the Zoom button again to return to the double-page width view.

On clicking the Zoom button, the mouse pointer changes to a zoom-in icon (magnifying glass). Now click the area of the page you want to enlarge. When zoomed in, you can move around the page by using the scrollbar, or by dragging the page up and down.

You click the Table of Contents button to open up a list of chapters for the book.

You click a chapter title to go straight to that chapter. To navigate to a specific page, click the Expand button to display thumbnail images of all of the pages in the chapter. Now click a specific page to navigate directly to that page.

At any time in the Table of Contents panel, click the Close button to return to the book without changing the page.

If you click a page within a chapter, the Table of Contents will automatically close and the selected page will open.

You click the Resources button to bring up a Resources Menu with three tabs. The first of these tabs, called Resources, lists the resources provided with the book for the current page.

There are six types of resources. You can select a category to see all the resources listed under that category. If the Page Resources check box is ticked, then the all the resources linked with that page are under the categories.

To list the resources associated with the book, but not associated with any particular page, you select the Book Resources check box.

In addition to clicking any resource to open it, you can also add, edit and delete your resources.

Search Resources

The third tab on the Resouces page is 'Search'.  This enables you to search through all the resources that come with the book and your own resources.

You click the Add Resources button to add a resource, such as an image, to the current page. You upload the image from your computer and enter a description. The image will be displayed as an icon on the page.

You use Add a Bookmark to link the current page to another page in any folensonline book.

You click Add Resources and place the Add a Bookmark icon where you want it to appear on the page. You then select the book’s page number that you would like to link to.
